Stacy,

It really depends on the child and the parent when you decide to make the transition. If you aren't comfortable with it, your child won't be either. If it's something you do feel everyone is ready for, be sure you get a rail for the sides of the bed where you are concerned he might fall out. My daughter is 4 and still has a rail. Also, my daughter has fallen out of bed. If the area around the bed is clear and the bed is close to the ground, it's pretty likely that there won't be any injury. Just a few tears from being woken up with such a start.
Good luck!

Chris,Thank you for commenting! My daughter moved to her big kid bed when she was 18 months and it was the best for her. It is definitely possible and can be a very positive experience. MM

Some very good advice, with one exception, in my experience. I know that conventional wisdom says "don't do it too early," but in fact, moving your child to a big bed (a mattress on teh floor WITH a railing & appealing sheets is best) when he/she is still young enough not to have toddler issues of control works best. I suggest 18 months. I know it sounds early, but it has worked beautifully for my own kids as well as several others I know. Kids above the age of 2 sense when we are trying to make a big deal out of something, talk something up ("your big boy bed! wow!"), and especially when we feel emotionally charged, worried, or torn about it. Get it over with before the age of 2! It works!
